History Once a British hill resort, its importance declined and it became a sleepy little hill town. Founded by the British between 1815 and 1847.In 1849, Dharamshala originated as an army subsidiary cantonment for troops stationed at Kangra and adopted its name from an old Hindu sanctuary, called ‘Dharamshala’. . Dharamshala remained a low-profile hill town till the influx of Tibetan refugees along with the Dalai Lama since October 1959. In 1959, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, came to Mcleodganj in Dharamshala as he had to flee from Tibet and the Prime Minister of India allowed him and his followers to settle here and they formed the Government-in-exile in 1960. India welcomed the religious leader and offered him and his people sanctuary and a place to stay in Dharamshala. Shimla: History Was Made Here By Aditi Shah March 12th 2019 “The air is delicious, most healthy and bracing, but anything more funny than the appearance of the town you cannot imagine… If you look up from your garden seat, you see the gables of a cottage tumbling down on the top of you. If you lean over your terrace wall, you look down on your neighbour’s chimney pots. That the capital of the Indian empire should be thus hanging on by its eyelids to the side of a hill is too absurd.” These lines form a part of a letter written by then Governor-General of India, Lord Dufferin, on 15th May 1885. He was describing Shimla, or Simla, as the British called it, a once inconspicuous village in the lap of the Himalayas which went on to become the summer capital of an empire that ruled one-fifth of the world’s population. The History of Manali gives an overall idea of the beautiful region. According to legends, the history continues from the Ramayana period. The name of the river Beas is designated by common traditions celebrated by the saint Vashishtha, whose references are available in the Ramayana. After the death of his son, he lost his interest in life, and jumped in the river with his feet and hands tied. But the divine river burst his bonds and, carried him to the shore. The river came to be known as ‘Vipasha’ or ‘the liberator of bonds.’ He then again threw himself into the Satluj but, the sacred waters of the river divided into hundred shallow channels and, sent the sage on dry land. Then the river is known as ‘Satadree’ or ‘the hundred channeled.’According to the Hindu mythology- Manali was the hometown of
